Deirdre Costigan selected to run for Labor in Ealing Southall – EALING.NEWS – The Voice of Ealing 7 towns

Ealing Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Councilor Deirdre Costigan has been selected to be Labour’s candidate for Ealing Southall in the upcoming General Election on 4th July 2024.

Councilor Costigan, who currently represents the Northolt Mandeville ward, replaces Virendra Sharma, who after 17 years decided to step down earlier this week (27 May 2024).

Mr Sharma became an MP in 2007 following a by-election triggered by the death of MP Piara Khabra.

In the last election in 2019, Mr Sharma had a majority of 16,084 over the Conservatives.

Councilor Costigan, currently works at the UNISON union where he is a national officer.

Announcing his candidacy to become an MP, Councilor Costigan said: “I am delighted to be running for Labor in Ealing Southall. With Keir Starmer at the helm, Labor is once again serving working people. We will end 14 years of Tory chaos and decline with a plan for national renewal built on a foundation of economic stability.”

She added: “Only a Labor government can deliver the change we need to get our streets back on track, get the NHS back on its feet, break down barriers to opportunity and get Britain building again.”

Posting on X, Ealing Council leader Councilor Peter Mason said: “I am so delighted for my friend, colleague and the most formidable deputy leader you could wish for. Congratulations @deirdrecostigan – you’re going to be incredible.”
