Brightside Lane closed live as suspected bomb closes Sheffield Road

A road has been closed in Sheffield after a suspected Second World War bomb was discovered in the city.

South Yorkshire Police were called to Brightside Lane at 10.55am today to reports of a bomb discovery. It was found during foundation work at Sheffield Forgemasters.




The force has now closed Brightside Lane in both directions from the junction at the roundabout to Hawke Street. A 100-metre cordon is in place as police deal with the explosive suspect.

Police said: “Please be aware that Brightside Lane is closed in both directions from the roundabout junction with Hawke Street. Please plan ahead and seek alternative routes where possible. Thank you for understanding”.

They added: “We were called at 10.55am today (May 30) to reports that a suspected Second World War explosive device had been discovered while groundwork was being carried out at Sheffield Forgemasters on Brightside Lane .

“Our officers are currently at the scene and there is a 100m cordon.”


The device found was not explosive

South Yorkshire Police said: “Our officers and an army bomb disposal team attended and the device was found to be non-explosive.

“My 100 cord has now been lifted. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

Brightside Lane has reopened

South Yorkshire Police said: “Following a previous road closure, Brightside Lane is now reopened in #Sheffield.

“We were called today (May 30) at 10.55am to reports that a suspected Second World War explosive device had been discovered while work was being carried out at Sheffield Forgemasters on Brightside Lane.”

A6109 Brightside Lane both ways closed, delays due to police incident at Jessops Riverside on A6102. Congestion to Upwell Street and Holywell Road.

Police statement as officers on scene

“Please note that Brightside Lane is closed in both directions from the junction of the roundabout with Hawke Street.

“Please plan ahead and seek alternate routes where possible. Thank you for your understanding.”
