Kevin Nagle shares an encouraging Huddersfield Town update on John Smith’s stadium situation

Huddersfield Town owner Kevin Nagle hopes to reach a deal “in the next week or two” to see the League One club acquire the John Smith’s Stadium.

Town are currently joint owners of the ground, along with Huddersfield Giants and Kirklees Council, with the trio operating the stadium through Kirklees Stadium Development Limited.

Both the Terriers and Council currently own 40%, while the Giants own 20%. However, Kirklees Council said in a report last October that they no longer wanted to be involved in the running of the stadium.

With Town keen to take sole control of the stadium, Nagle believes the club are closing in on a deal to do so, with the owner hoping a deal can be reached in the coming weeks.

Giving an update on the club’s aim to acquire the ground, Nagle told a diary of X: “(We are in) very tough negotiations.

“It’s funny enough, just before that I was working with Michael Thomas, who as you know is my finance director, I was working on a counter-proposal for Mr (Ken) Davy, who actually owns Huddersfield Giants, who previously former chairman of Huddersfield Town AFC as well. You will get the latest proposal from me.

“I feel we are very close. I think there are three or four points and I hope we have an agreement. So far Ken has been really great to deal with and I feel like we’ll cross the finish line maybe in the next week or two. I feel that. I hope I’m not mocking myself, but the reality is that negotiations are becoming fluid.

“I think really, we’re going to try to move and obviously make John Smith’s Stadium — or whatever it might be called in the future, because we’re going to want to make a change in that — one of the hubs, if not the center. from Huddersfield where we plan to have a lot of changes happening there and I’m excited about that.

“We have a lot of them that are actually being designed right now, we’re just trying to figure out in what order because you’re against the clock. The Giants are playing there right now and they’re going to be playing there for the next six weeks or two months and we’ve got to make sure we’re ready.”
