Warrington Wolves have a potentially season-defining fortnight as they face Wigan Warriors in back-to-back games. They host Wigan in Super League this weekend before the sides meet again the following week at Wembley in the Challenge Cup final.

Warrington head coach Sam Burgess has named a much-changed squad for this weekend’s game against Wigan. Burgess has named a nine-change squad from last weekend’s clash with Catalans Dragons and up to six young players could make their Wolves debuts.

While some of these changes rest key players ahead of the Challenge Cup final, others have been forced upon Wolves. For example, George Williams will sit out the game because he is serving a one-game suspension.

Now Warrington have confirmed that another key player will not only miss the game at Wigan, but a significant part of the season.

In a post on social media site X, Warrington confirmed that Philbin was dealing with a long-term injury as a result of the sacking. The statement read:

“Joe Philbin had successful surgery today for an adductor injury that will keep our forward shortstop out for about 10 weeks.

“We wish Philbs a speedy recovery”

Philbin will miss Wolves’ Challenge Cup final as a result of the injury. However, without complications, he should be available for Warrington’s final season.

It’s a cruel blow for Philbin to suffer on the eve of such a big game. He has been a crucial part of Sam Burgess’ side this season and produced a number of impressive performances.

Philbin has made 11 Super League appearances so far this season, scoring a try in Warrington’s round three match against Castleford Tigers. He is averaging eight yards per carry and has made 12 tackles in his 11 games.
