Sheffield Wednesday could need £5.95m to sign summer transfer target

Sheffield Wednesday may well have been pulled out of a summer swoop for this one-off transfer target.

Sheffield Wednesday appear to be making moves in the transfer market, with several names entering their radar in recent weeks.

Charlie Goode is the latest; The centre-back is set to leave Brentford on a free agent in June, with Bees boss Thomas Frank a big admirer.

Elsewhere, former Liverpool talent Ovie Ejaria is also believed to be on Sheffield Wednesday’s radar; has been a free agent since leaving Reading in December 2023.

Other names on Danny Rohl’s wishlist include Duncan McGuire, Karamoko Dembele and January loan trio Ian Poveda, James Beadle and Ike Ugbo.

Elsewhere, the Owls are believed to be back in the market for Mika Biereth; the Arsenal talent was wanted by Sheffield Wednesday in January but went on to help Sturm Graz lift the Austrian Bundesliga title.

The value of Mika Biereth’s transfer to Arsenal has been revealed

A developing report from Austria discussed Biereth’s current transfer value after his impressive loan spell with Sturm Graz.

Liga Portal claim that Biereth, who has scored five goals and assisted two more in 15 league appearances for Sturm Graz, has doubled his January transfer value.

Their report says Biereth is now valued at €7m (£5.95m) ahead of the summer, although Arsenal are reportedly prepared to take him on their pre-season tour of the USA.

In 2023/24, Biereth scored a total of 11 league goals and claimed seven assists after spending the first half of the campaign on loan with Motherwell.

Can Sheffield Wednesday realistically sign Mika Biereth

Should Sheffield Wednesday sign Biereth, it would make him the second most expensive signing of all time behind Jordan Rhodes.

And while there are suggestions that Dejphon Chansiri will spend money on the right player this summer, spending nearly £6m on one seems unlikely.

While he is a player with potential and one that Sheffield Wednesday have clearly done their research on, £6m could realistically be used to bring in some quality players.

So if this emerging claim is to be believed, it could end any chances of Wednesday signing Biereth this summer; unless it is a loan business.

That could depend on whether or not Sturm Graz pursue a permanent deal. If not, then it could leave the door open for another loan exit.

A loan move for Biereth could make more sense for the Owls and playing in England’s second tier could be a great development for Biereth as a player as it is a much more physical league and still full of quality.
