Chris Powell picks a Sheffield Wednesday game where fans were ‘unreal’

Sheffield Wednesday assistant manager Chris Powell has discussed the 2023/24 season and the game that “really” got to him.

Chris Powell has become a household name among Sheffield Wednesday fans following his arrival as assistant manager at the same time as Danny Rohl’s arrival.

It seems that Dejphon Chansiri would have wanted a native English speaker with experience of the English game to come in and help Rohl settle.

And it worked; although much of the credit goes to Rohl and the Sheffield Wednesday players, the arrivals of coaches such as Powell, Henrik Pedersen, Sascha Lense, Sal Bibbo and others have undeniably helped the Owls beat the drop.

Powell has since spoken about the 2023/24 season on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast with Sam Allardyce.

Chris Powell recalls ‘unreal’ Plymouth 3-0 Sheffield Wednesday support

Speaking about the Sheffield Wednesday fans, Powell said: “The support, I think, is unreal. I bought it.

“The fans know I really enjoyed myself… It just got under my skin. I just love how they have supported the club.

“What really got me; The second game I played in, we played Plymouth away. Plymouth is far from everywhere and we’re exhausted.

“Two and a half thousand. Wednesday night. He hadn’t won a game. Singing the whole game. We lost 3-0 and I remember walking away thinking, ‘If we just get a little bit better, what will they be like?’

The defeat at Plymouth was Rohl’s second in charge. The Owls then won their next match 2–0 at home to Rotherham United, securing their first win of the season.

A constant at Sheffield Wednesday

No matter how bad things have been on or off the pitch at Sheffield Wednesday, the fans have always remained loyal.

Powell chooses a very good example; a 10-and-a-half-hour round trip to Plymouth on a Wednesday night, winless all season, yet the Owls faithful sold out the away side.

Rohl and Powell then rewarded the fans with their first win of the season at Rotherham, with many beginning to believe that Sheffield Wednesday could beat the drop.

This feels like a long time ago now. There have been many emotions since then and much has changed. But Rohl has since signed a new deal, and Powell looks set to stay as well.

Things are certainly looking up for Sheffield Wednesday, but there is still a lot of work to be done in the transfer market this summer and behind the scenes as well.

The Owls are hard at work in the transfer market with several names now being linked including Charlie Goode, Karamoko Dembele, Ovie Ejaria and more.
