The midfielder has become a vital player since returning to his hometown club in 2022 and after leading the side to the League One title, concern has grown as fans await confirmation of his situation.

Now, though, it looks like Portsmouth are in line for a big push.

News states that Pompey and the Pack have ended negotiations after reaching an agreement on a contract extension. The 33-year-old is said to have agreed a new two-year deal at Fratton Park, keeping him on board until the summer of 2026.

Of course, it remains to be made official, but this update will come as a big boost for John Mousinho and co.

It adds that Pack is seen within the club as someone who could easily move into another role with them once his playing days are over. A new two-year deal suggests that day won’t come anytime soon.

Who is this?

THE TEST STARTS!

A vital agreement

Pack is up there with the most important players in the Portsmouth squad, so retaining his services in the middle of the park will be a huge boost for Mousinho and his teammates alike.

The hometown midfielder is a leader on and off the pitch, often barking orders at his teammates. The level of experience he brings has been essential in League One and, with 269 Championship appearances, he will be valuable there too.

However, he was more than a leader and an experienced head. The Pack was a real creative outlet from his deep-lying midfield role as well, registering three goals and nine assists in 38 third-tier games in their promotion campaign.

Long balls are key in stretching opponents out and will likely be a source of threat as they head into the Championship.

What’s next?

Once an agreement is reached on Pack’s deal, the hope is that more will follow suit.

The contract options of Joe Morrell and Zak Swanson have not been triggered, but talks have continued to keep them on new terms. Both can be valuable assets in their return to the Championship, but it is yet to be confirmed whether they will stay or move on.

Connor Ogilvie, like the Pack, did not have an option in his contract, but was offered a new deal. It is hoped that he will also remain as a key option on the left side of defence.

Fingers will be crossed that with Portsmouth tying the Pack, further deals won’t be too far away. That goes for both new contracts and potential new signings with a busy summer ahead.
