Wolves set for another payday for Manchester City’s Matheus Nunes, new release clause revealed

Manchester City could issue Wolves with extra money over Matheus Nunes after a new clause emerged in their deal last summer.

The Portugal international made the switch to the Etihad Stadium towards the end of last summer’s transfer window as the Premier League champions came to terms with Kevin De Bruyne’s long-term injury.

The 2023 summer market also saw transfers in Manchester City’s midfield in terms of exits, with Ilkay Gundogan ending his legendary spell in blue by joining FC Barcelona on a free transfer.

In the same market, City signed Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea in a £30m move, but their failure to sign Lucas Paqueta from West Ham saw the club move on Matheus Nunes.

However, while Manchester City’s initial financial outlay for Matheus Nunes was already considered a bargain by many supporters, the amount of money Wolves receive for the player could be further increased by a new clause.

The emergence of Wolves’ buy-bust clause comes as the 25-year-old Portugal international has been linked with a permanent move elsewhere this summer despite recently joining the Etihad Stadium project, with clubs in Saudi Arabia interested.

Nunes has endured a largely challenging first season with Manchester City as he tries to come to terms with the demands of working under Pep Guardiola and acclimatise to the style of play at the Etihad Stadium.

The former Sporting CP man has amassed a total of 31 appearances in all competitions, notching his first goal for Manchester City but registering five assists, spread across the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup.

However, Nunes remains confident about his career working under Pep Guardiola, explaining last season about the Catalan coach: “(He) is probably the best in the world for many years and I think I will learn so much.

“I can only see myself getting better. Also with the top quality players we have in the squad, so I think this will be a very good journey.”
