Teacher got teenager pregnant while on bail for sex with another boy, jury heard

A teacher became pregnant by a teenager while she was on bail for allegedly having sex with a pupil, a jury heard. Rebecca Joynes, 30, is on trial at Manchester Crown Court charged with six counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, including two while a person in a position of trust.

Joynes is said to have groomed her first alleged victim, Boy A, by buying him a £345 designer Gucci belt and then taking him to her then flat in Salford, Greater Manchester, where they allegedly had sex with twice. A police investigation ensued, as the defendant was suspended from her school, and she later told police that no sexual activity had occurred.

She was later released on bail on the condition that she have no unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 18. Opening the case on Monday, prosecutor Joe Allman said Boy A went to court and answered questions from Joynes’ lawyer in a taped cross-examination.

Mr Allman continued: “The case was then adjourned to await the remainder of the trial, but in the meantime it emerged that Ms Joynes had a long-term sexual relationship with another 15-year-old pupil of hers. In due course (Boy B) gave his own account.

“He said Ms Joynes was his teacher, they were in contact while she was suspended and he went to her flat when he was 15.

“They kissed and then after he turned 16 they started a full on affair with her getting pregnant, much to his shock she told him she couldn’t get pregnant because she had polycystic ovary syndrome. Remarkably, and in all honesty, quite unspeakably, all of this was happening while Ms Joynes was on bail at this court.

“Of course she can’t deny that sexual relationship because she got pregnant with (Boy B)’s child and had (Boy B’s) child. Instead, this time she claims the sexual activity didn’t start until he was over 16 and she was eventually dismissed from the school.”

Mr Allman said Boy A told police Joynes gave him 10 of the 11 digits of her phone number and “challenged” him to guess the remaining digit. She kept suggesting he stay at her flat, said Boy A, who “thought she was joking at first”, the court heard.

Joynes took him in her white Audi close to his home and stopped at a doggy daycare center to pick up her dog, which she had left at her parents’ home in Wirral, Merseyside, Mr Allman said. The prosecutor said: “He then drove him back to Manchester and took him to the Trafford Center where they went to the Gucci stand in Selfridges and told him he could choose a belt.”

In the early evening they arrived at her flat in Salford Quays, where they sat on the sofa, then went to the bedroom where they undressed and had sex, the court heard. Boy A told police the defendant told him several times it was “better that no one found out”, the jury was told.

The pair later had sex again, he said, and at this point he was “quite confused” and told the two friends on Snapchat about what had happened, the court heard. Mr Allman said that over the weekend “somewhat predictably” one or both friends told others and “a rumor started to circulate”.

An anonymous tip-off to Childline also followed, while police visited the school the following week, the court was told. The prosecutor said the two communicated via Snapchat and the messages were mostly unrecoverable, but one was recovered from Joynes, which contained a heart and three kisses.

Boy B told police he knew Joynes was suspended when he met her at her flat and they kissed when she was 15, the court was told. Mr Allman said Boy B sent her a “crude” text that read: “Put your breasts out”, to which she replied: “Not tonight”.

Joynes was also said to have sent her a photo of her bottom with her only wearing panties, the court heard. Boy B said Joynes later revealed she was pregnant to him and presented a Victoria’s Secret scrap with sexual fantasies for him to act out, the jury heard.

The teenager said Joynes scattered rose petals in the flat for their ‘date night’, ordered food delivery from Pizza Express and left a ‘trail of surprises’, the latest being a child raised with the words ‘I love my dad’ , the court was told. Boy B said Joynes was “very jealous and controlling of him”, the jury heard.

Joynes denies two counts of sexual activity with Boy A, two counts of sexual activity with Boy B and two counts of sexual activity with Boy B while a person in a position of trust.

The two-week trial continues.
