Sheffield Wednesday man Mallik Wilks watched by Charlton Athletic, Stockport

Sheffield Wednesday striker Mallik Wilks is a target for Charlton Athletic, Stockport County and Reading, according to Football Insider.

Sheffield Wednesday have had versatile forward Wilks since the summer of 2022, bringing him in from Hull City after two-and-a-half years on Humberside.

The former Leeds United and Barnsley player scored two goals and provided five assists in 26 games as the Owls won promotion from League One, but injury problems limited his action.

Chances have been hard to come by this season too, with 18 appearances – many of which came as a substitute – yielding just one goal.

He threw his future into doubt heading into the summer transfer window and now Football Insider claim the 25-year-old has admirers in League One.

They claim the Sheffield Wednesday forward is a target for Charlton Athletic, Stockport County and Reading ahead of next season. Wilks could leave on either a permanent or temporary basis, and those keen will explore the possibility of bringing him in.

Who is this?

THE TEST STARTS!

Better somewhere else?

Danny Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday will embark on a busy summer transfer window as they prepare for the new season and you can’t help but feel that the new signings only push Wilks further down the ranks.

It hasn’t been the easiest of times at Hillsborough for the versatile attacker, so a move elsewhere – whether permanent or on loan – could be ideal for him.

Charlton Athletic, Stockport County and Reading will all be interesting options for Wilks to explore.

The Addicks are looking forward to an exciting season under Nathan Jones after an impressive turnaround following his arrival, while the Royals will be looking to move further up the league after a season marred by points deductions.

As for the Hatters, they will be determined to make a positive impact as League One football returns to Edgeley Park. A move for someone like Wilks will help them do that.

A League 1 star

Wilks has been a real standout in League One before, so it wouldn’t surprise him if that’s where he’s heading if an exit from Sheffield Wednesday comes to fruition.

He has 34 goals and 21 assists to his name in 106 third tier outings. His return of 30 goals and 10 assists in 91 games for Hull City saw him play a key role in their promotion, while also enjoying a strong spell at Doncaster Rovers.

Wilks will be determined to prove his skills can translate at Championship level, but even if only for now, a return to League One could allow him to find his feet again and return to his dangerous best .

Charlton, Stockport and Reading could all be good options for Wilks, but time will tell what comes out of his situation.
