“Many will never have met another MP in their lifetime – he is more than an MP, he is a friend to everyone in Huddersfield”

As Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman comes to the end of his term, Kirklees Council group leaders have paid tribute to the long-serving MP.

Sheerman was first elected in 1979 and held office for 45 years. After almost half a century in the service of the city and campaigning for national initiatives, he will retire this year at the age of 83.

Kirklees Labor Group leader Councilor Carole Pattison said: “Barry Sheerman has given 45 years of service to the community of Huddersfield. Many have never met another MP in their lifetime.
