A trial date has been set for the teenager accused of the bottle attack at Birley Academy

A court date has been set for a teenager accused of a glass attack at a Sheffield school which sent shockwaves through the city.

The 17-year-old – who cannot be named for legal reasons – made his first appearance at Sheffield Crown Court on Friday charged with three counts of attempted grievous bodily harm following the incident at Birley Academy on May 1. He is also charged with possession. of a blade or sharp object on school premises.



Emergency services attended the scene following reports of an incident involving a sharp object – understood to be a piece of glass – at the school in Birley Lane. Two women in their 20s and a child suffered minor injuries that did not require hospital treatment.

The school was placed on lockdown following the incident.

Appearing in court via video link from a young offenders institution, the boy was addressed by the Recorder of Sheffield, Judge Jeremy Richardson KC, who said he would explain what would happen at the end of the short plea, trial and the preparatory hearing.

The boy was not required to enter a plea to the charges.

Another hearing, trial and preparation was set for July 12 this year, and the trial date was set for August 5, with an estimated time of five days. The case was adjourned for reports to take place. The boy was remanded in custody.
