The FA is investigating reports of overcrowding during the Sheffield Wednesday vs Newcastle FA Cup match

The FA is investigating reports of overcrowding away at Hillsborough during the FA Cup match between Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle.

Fans at the Leppings Lane end have removed the nets from the seats to avoid being crushed around the tunnel leading to the lower tier.

The same stand was the scene of the Hillsborough tragedy in 1989, which left 97 Liverpool fans dead after a crush.

Some Newcastle fans have suggested that overcrowding occurred when supporters tunneled through to the center stand. Fans also expressed concern over what they said was a lack of service administrators.

The FA will speak to officials from both clubs, while safety officers will be asked for their views.

Newcastle United Supporters Trust appealed for information and asked the 4,500 traveling fans to share their experiences. One told The Times: “It was a cordoned off area with nets. We had to take it out to make a space because we had nowhere to go.”

The League One side caused an upset in the third round on Wednesday when they beat Newcastle 2-1.
