The University of Manchester to offer youth sports summer camp

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. (WPTA) – Starting in 2019, sports are offered to students at Manchester University.

“We compete in six different titles, and Super Smash Bros has been our most successful title,” said Director of Esports Garrett Schieferstein.

Schieferstein says that since the program’s inception, they have won seven Great Lakes Esports Conference (GLEC) championships in Super Smash Bros.

Now I’m taking that experience and using it to create a summer camp for kids.

“We wanted to bring the community to Manchester for Super Smash Bros,” said Schieferstein. “So we invite the youth from the surrounding area to the campus to learn from our fantastic players here and have fun playing sports and Super Smash Bros.”

Schieferstein knows that not all parents understand the concept of sports. But he wants you to know that it’s like any other sports camp.

“Your part of a team here, you have the interpersonal communication, the teamwork, everyone is working toward a goal, and those things that you learn in athletics, you learn in sports,” Schieferstein said.

Schieferstein, along with advisors like August Elliott, are excited to teach what they love to the next generation.

“We want these kids to come here as strangers but leave as friends and keep that later in the future where it’s a friendship that goes beyond the game,” Elliot said.

Summer camp will be offered in June.

Two camps are offered: a day camp for 3rd graders and up on June 14, and an overnight camp for 7th through 12th graders on June 13-15 June.

You can register for day camp here and overnight camp here. Entries close on June 7.
