Two Coventry, RI firefighters injured along Hwy

Two Coventry firefighters were injured late on Wednesday night after their rig was hit along a motorway.

They were getting out of their truck at a home off Victory Highway when an oncoming car slammed into the vehicle’s open door, Coventry Capt. Robert Mann told WPRI.

Mann said one firefighter was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries. He is expected to recover. The other suffered minor injuries.

The search continues for the driver who fled the incident. There was no description of the vehicle that was hit.

β€œIt could have gone very badly, very quickly. But nothing life-threatening. But they probably have a long road to recovery ahead of them,” Mann told WJAR.

Other firefighters on the scene immediately radioed for help.

Mann is asking drivers to slow down and pull over for crews operating along the highway.
