Coventry University has opened a building in honor of the music icon

COVENTRY University has officially opened a building in honor of the city’s musical icon Delia Derbysire.

Delia was particularly known for her work with the BBC Radio Workshop and the Doctor Who theme music.

The Delia Derbyshire Building is home to Coventry University’s art and design courses, as well as a collaborative space for other courses in the media and performing arts, humanities and social sciences.

The opening took place last Thursday, and a line-up of artists and captivating performances was a video screening of Delia creating the music that saw her rise to fame.

Guests on the day included BBC Radio 6 Music DJ Stuart Maconie, who hosted an event and discussion with Cosey Fanni Tutti, whose new book explores the life of Delia Derbyshire.

The building includes two immersive studios and a large-scale project Hyperstudio, which has been renamed the Bugatti Trust Hyperstudio, with the Trust bringing a 1930 Bugatti 35B racing car to the event.

ProfJohn Latham CBE, Vice-Chancellor of Coventry University said: “Delia Derbyshire was proud to call Coventry home, as we are, and so we couldn’t be more proud to name this amazing hub of creativity after her.

“The home is home to technology, studios and workshops, meaning the next generation of innovators and visionaries have the chance to see their ideas blossom and their creativity harnessed.”
