Man convicted of killing ‘wonderful young mum’ 13 years after attacking her for leaving him

A man who murdered a “wonderful young mother” after she left him 13 years ago has been sentenced. Trevor Baker, 53, who is serving his sentence at HMP Warren Hill, appeared at the Old Bailey yesterday (Friday 31 May) where he was hit with at least 20 years behind bars for the murder of Carolyn Kemp.

This will be less time since his 2010 attempted murder conviction, meaning Baker will serve an additional five years and eight months in prison. Carolyn Kemp was 34 when Baker left her paralyzed from the waist down and with a serious brain injury after attacking her at his home in Walmer Close, Romford, on November 25, 2009.

Baker, who was in prison for Carolyn’s attempted murder, pleaded guilty yesterday to murder after she died of her injuries nearly 13 years after the attack. Carolyn had left Baker six months before the attack.

Baker did not take it well and attacked Carolyn. At the time he pleaded guilty to attempted murder and was sentenced to 16 years in prison, to serve a minimum of eight years.

Sadly, Carolyn died in September 2022 of aspiration pneumonia, after a post-mortem finding that had it not been for her brain damage, she would have survived.

Pathologists concluded that had Carolyn not suffered horrific brain damage in 2009, she would have survived aspiration pneumonia. Baker was charged with murder on 5 December 2023. He appeared at the Old Bailey on Friday 22 March where he pleaded guilty.

“Carolyn was the sweetest little girl”

Speaking on behalf of the family, Carolyn’s mother said: “My beautiful daughter Carolyn was the sweetest little girl any mother could have. Growing up, she always had a smile on her face that made you and everyone around her smile.
