Manchester city center tram collapse LIVE as area is cordoned off with firefighters on scene

Firefighters rushed to Manchester city center this afternoon after a car was hit by a tram.

Part of the tram line through St. Peter’s Square is currently closed. The accident happened on Oxford Street between St Peter’s Square and Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink stations.




Footage from the scene shows a car that appears to have been hit by a tram as it traveled along Oxford Street. The area around the incident has now been cordoned off.

Police and paramedics were also called to the scene. It is not yet known if anyone was injured in the accident.

The tram line through St Peter’s Square is one of Manchester’s busiest, with travelers from Eccles, Altrincham and East Didsbury traveling through the area.

Emergency services on site

In a statement, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said three fire engines were called to the scene where a man was taken to hospital.

A spokesman said: “Just before 2pm this afternoon (Saturday 1St June), three fire engines from Manchester Central, Salford Central and Moss Side fire station were called to reports of a vehicle that had collided with a tram near St Peter’s Square, Manchester.

“The teams quickly arrived at the scene. Firefighters used stabilization equipment and small tools to secure the vehicle and tram. A man who was in the vehicle was taken to hospital by colleagues from the North West Ambulance Service.

“Firefighters have been in attendance for approximately forty minutes and are still at the scene.”
