Several fire crews are tackling a huge blaze at the Cardew industrial estate in Redruth

“Avoid the area” is the message to the public following a large fire in Redruth this morning.

Fire crews were alerted at around 7.30am on Saturday June 1 to the blaze at Cardew Industrial Estate in Redruth, where 3000 pallets and five shipping containers are believed to have caught fire.

Nine fire crews from all over the county were called to fight the flames, which led to the appearance of large plumes of smoke in the area.

A statement on the Cornwall Fire and Rescue website said: “We are currently attending an incident on Cardrew Industrial Estate in Redruth.

“Teams from Tolvaddon, Hayle, Perranporth and Falmouth, Truro, St Just, St Austell, St Columb and Helston are at the scene.

“The incident involves 3000 pallets and five shipping containers. The fire spread to a single-story building containing cylinders.

“The public is asked to avoid the area due to heavy smoke.”

Cornwall Council also shared a post on its social media accounts asking residents and businesses near the industrial estate to “keep windows and doors closed”.

The incident comes just days after a fire broke out at a large industrial building in Devoran.
