Warrington Wolves and Wigan Warriors met in a dress rehearsal for the Challenge Cup final, with Wigan coming out on top in a close encounter. However, a red card for Adam Keighran was the main talking point. Sam Burgess has now given his take on the incident.

Keighran was shown a red card for a high tackle on Warrington youngster Arron Lindop. Keighran’s shoulder made contact with Lindop’s head as Lindop went down under a tackle from Junior Nsemba. The referee, Jack Smith, did not hesitate when he showed the red card.

Keighran will now face the Match Review Panel, who will decide whether he faces a ban. If Keighran is suspended, he will miss Wigan’s Challenge Cup final against Warrington next weekend. The red card is a blow to head coach Matt Peet, who decided not to change his side for the game, preferring to name a strong side for Wigan’s 19-18 win.

Speaking to Sky after the game, Burgess could not hide his pride in his young side. Against a strong Wigan side, Burgess was delighted to see his side compete. He believes his side left the field having secured a win, even if they didn’t take home two precious competition points.

“I am very proud of the team, I played with a very young team. Four guys on debut and 10 guys from our scholarship system.

“It was probably the most enjoyable game of the year, I’m so proud of them. They faced a great Wigan team and were right in it until the end.

“I’m very happy with the way we played and even though we didn’t get the two points, I think it’s a win for us.”

Wigan are back level with St Helens at the top of the Super League table on 20 points, although the Warriors have a game in hand. Warrington slip back to third, two points behind the leading defender.

Speaking in the Warrington Guardian, Burgess gave his thoughts on the Keighran incident. Burgess said that while it was up to the Match Review Committee to decide on the incident, he would prefer to see both sides field a full side for the Wembley showdown.

“People might not agree with it, but I don’t like to see players lose finals. It dilutes the competition.

“We want them to have all their players and have the best squad possible, but there is a process.

“George Williams missed a week this week for not much. There’s a system and a process there, so we’ll see what happens this week.

Despite losing 19-18, the young Warrington side can be proud of their performance in defeat. Their 17-man squad had four debutants, all of whom impressed for the Wire despite the result.
