Motorists warned not to fill up with petrol this week after new law change | Liverpool Echo

Drivers may start to see a difference at gas stations because of a new law that could save them some money.

The UK government has recently implemented a new law, allowing them to closely monitor any price irregularities taking place in the petrol and diesel forecourts. It comes after people were forced to pay sky-high prices for fuel.

Given the current situation where the UK has the highest diesel prices in Europe and one of the highest petrol prices, according to breakdown experts at the RAC, the move is seen as essential.

The newly introduced Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act could reduce prices and prevent price gouging by high margin retailers at refueling. Currently, the average price for a liter of petrol is 149p, while diesel is priced at 155p. Both prices drastically exceed European averages, Express reports.

In line with the content of the new legislation which became active on 24 May, the Act will also give the CMA new powers to closely monitor fuel prices and report any signs of malpractice to the government.”

This could point to a reduction in prices once the law is fully operational, suggesting it may be worth waiting before filling up to see if prices actually drop.
