John O’Shea backs Erik ten Hag to stay on as Manchester United manager

John O’Shea believes Manchester United should stick with Erik ten Hag as manager next season.

Ireland’s caretaker boss won five Premier League titles, a Champions League and an FA Cup with the Red Devils as a player.

And he believes United’s FA Cup final win against Manchester City is why the Dutchman is staying.

There were reports before that clash at Wembley that Ten Hag would be sacked regardless of the result.

Manchester United bosses could yet pull the trigger, but O’Shea believes Sir Jim Ratcliffe should not rush into a decision.

O’Shea said: “It was a fantastic performance to win against City because nobody gave them a chance.

“It was an amazing performance and great to see the younger academy boys doing business with Garnacho and Mainoo getting the goals.

“As for Ten Hag, time will tell. I’m sure people will reflect on the season as a whole and that’s what he’ll be judged on.

“But I hope he gives it another season and more time and we’ll see what happens from there.”

O’Shea, who is preparing Ireland for Tuesday’s friendly with Hungary, continued: “People will argue that they need a new manager.

“There is a new structure with the sporting director, the technical director and the CEO. It would indicate that they are looking to attract someone new.

“But maybe a constant would be good – someone who knows everyone and the players in particular. He didn’t do himself any harm (winning the FA Cup).”

Meanwhile, O’Shea has revealed he will travel to Euro 2024 this month to hold a brief England tour.

Ireland host the Three Lions in a Nations League clash in September and it should be the first game for the new Ireland manager.

The six-month search for Stephen Kenny’s successor is still ongoing, but O’Shea must prepare for all eventualities as he remains a contender himself.

“I plan to go to a few games,” he said. “You’re constantly learning and improving by going to see different games and different scenarios.

“England is rounding the corner. They’re definitely a team I could watch.”
