Wigan Warriors boss Matt Peet hits out at Adam Keighran and discusses the appeal position

Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet had no sympathy for his center Adam Keighran, who was shown a red card in Saturday afternoon’s game against Warrington Wolves.

The Australian was sent off for a shocking shoulder tackle on the head of young Warrington center Arron Lindop with 10 minutes remaining at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, an action which is likely to see Keighran suspended for next Saturday’s Challenge Cup final.

It was a blow for Wigan boss Peet, whose side fought back to win 19-18 against a young Wolves side in a dress rehearsal for next weekend’s clash at Wembley.

Warrington head coach Sam Burgess opted to make 11 changes for the game, while Peet went with a much stronger side. That decision may have been reversed, albeit now following Keighran’s sending off.

Wigan Warriors boss discusses ‘poor’ red card

Speaking after the game, Peet was blunt in his assessment of the incident involving Keighran and admitted there was a chance it would “cost” him the chance to play at Wembley next Saturday.

“I thought it was poor of him to be honest,” Peet said. “He’s done things like this before and I talked to him about it.

“He will be disappointed with his actions there. I think there was some mitigation, but he has to be more orderly than that. He will be the first to put his hands up and it could cost him.”

Sky Sports presenter Jenna Brooks then asked Peet if he would consider appealing the red card shown to Keighran by referee Jack Smith, to which he replied: “I’m not sure yet, we’ll see.”

Peet admits ‘better team lost’

Speaking about the game itself in his post-match chat on Sky Sports, Peet was also exceptionally candid, admitting that although Warrington deserved to win the game.

It was a moral victory for Wolves, who expected to be torn apart by a much stronger Wigan side, and Peet accepted that his side were poor for most of the encounter.

“I thought Warrington were the better team for most of the game, they were unlucky not to win,” admitted Peet.

“I like the fact that we won, but I did some bad things. Don’t take anything away from Warrington, they had a young team.

“A good day for them and a tough day for us. We will love quickly, we will not dwell on it. It was about two points and I got the minutes. I guess that’s what we did.”
