Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl admits he is unsure whether the club can reach an agreement with Manchester United over Jadon Sancho this summer.

Sancho joined Dortmund on loan in the January transfer window after being left out of United’s first team by Erik ten Hag last September.

The 24-year-old refused to apologize for a social media post responding to Ten Hag’s suggestion that he was not performing well enough in training.

Since moving to Dortmund, Sancho has regained his form and the German club are now keen to extend the winger’s stay.

However, United still have a decision to make in replacing Sancho, who they signed from Dortmund for £73m in 2021.

Asked about the prospect of Dortmund keeping Sancho ahead of their defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League final, Kehl told TNT Sports: “I don’t know yet, to be honest.

“It’s been great to have him for the last six months, he’s increased our quality in the team and he’s looking forward to the final. He wants to win.

“Everything else will be decided later, the situation is quite clear. He is still under contract with Manchester, we don’t have an option to buy, which means we have to talk and we have to negotiate, I don’t know if it will work.

“But first of all I hope he scores once or twice tonight and then the price goes up.”

Meanwhile, former United defender Rio Ferdinand believes Sancho showed “character” with his response to Dortmund after falling out of favor at United.

“A lot has been said about him, a lot of negative things, and I think it’s time to give him a bit of credit,” Ferdinand told talkSPORT.

— Because I think it was a very difficult time for him. He was criticized, rightly or wrongly.

“In the situation that happened between him and the manager, we can debate who was right and who was wrong. But he was criticized a lot, his confidence was very low, he went into a period of isolation in terms of training away from the team.

“Now he’s gone to Dortmund to rebuild himself, as a footballer, as a human being, and he’s come out the other side.

“Whether he wins the Champions League or not, you have to look at what he has achieved in this short period of time and you say, ‘you know what? This kid has character.”

“He’s got personality, he’s built from the right stuff and I think that’s where he needs credit.”
