Argument between couple on Birmingham street ends in shots fired; man dead, woman detained

An argument between a man and a woman turned violent in Birmingham on Saturday night.

North Precinct city officers were dispatched just before 7:30 p.m. to a call of a person shot in the 3500 block of Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard North.

Once on scene, they found the male victim in a grassy field just off the road and next to a trucking company. He was dead at the scene.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said investigators believe the victim was involved in a domestic disturbance with his girlfriend.

The shooting reportedly took place outside the vehicle in which the couple had been traveling. Both front doors were open and the victim was only a few steps away from the car.

Officers in the city’s North Precinct were dispatched just before 7:30 p.m., Saturday, June 1, 2024, to a call of a person shot in the 3500 block of Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard North.

“We think the girlfriend is the shooter,” he said. “She stayed at the scene and may have even been the one to call 911.”

The woman will be interviewed at the police headquarters.

“We’re going to try to identify what happened tonight,” Fitzgerald said.

The man is the second homicide in the city on Saturday and the 60th since 2024. Of those, five were deemed justifiable and therefore not considered criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there were 83 homicides, including the 60 in Birmingham.

In the pre-dawn hours of Saturday, a 31-year-old man was fatally shot in the Tom Brown Village public housing community.

Anyone with information is asked to call Birmingham homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
