‘Could be in his favour’ – Sam Tomkins suggests Adam Keighran could escape ban

Wigan Warriors won their Challenge Cup final warm-up against Warrington Wolves. Head coach Matt Peet chose to name a strong side for the game against a much-changed Wolves line-up. The Warriors held on for a close 19-18 win, but the win came at a cost. Sam Tomkins has now weighed in on the debate surrounding the game’s most controversial incident.

in the 69th minute Adam Keighran was shown a red card for a high shot on Warrington youngster Arron Lindop. Keighran’s shoulder was deemed to have made direct contact with Lindop’s head and referee Jack Smith showed no hesitation in sending Keighran off.

The decision to show Keighran a red card means he faces a nervous wait to see if he will be available for next weekend’s Challenge Cup final. Given the decision to show him a straight red, he is likely to receive a ban for the incident unless mitigating factors can be found.

According to Wigan legend, Sam Tomkins thought a great loss for Wigan. Despite the contact with the chief, Tomkins believes there may be some mitigation in the fact that Lindop fell under the contact from Nsemba. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said:

“His legs have been taken, he is very low, but there is contact with his head. You know, the more you look at him, the harder it is to look and favor Adam. He is a friend of mine. I really hope he gets to run at Wembley next week. but it will be a nervous few days for the Wigan club and for Adam himself.” Tomkins said.

“Yes, he is a starter, a complete starter for the Wigan team. that’s one of the risks of playing one of your top players. You risk injury, you risk suspension, it was a clumsy collision.

“The fact that he was only a meter off the floor might work in Adam’s favor, but that will certainly be looked at during the week.”

Fellow pundit Jodie Cunningham believes Keighran will be extremely disappointed that he could miss next week’s show at Wembley, and his team-mates will be equally disappointed with him.

“Look, that win comes at a cost and it was just a win in the end. We did not expect this score, but now there is a cost to this victory. Adam Keighran will be gutted this week.

“His teammates will be rooting for him”

Sam Tomkins questions head contact rules

Following the decision, Tomkins questioned the head contact rules. Under current rules, players have a duty to expect the attacking player to drop in height. Tomkins believes this places an unrealistic expectation on the quarterback.

“Making the judgment that you should expect a player to fall in height. I don’t know how a player can expect that. He doesn’t know how Junior Nsemba will tackle him from the inside. He doesn’t know if he’ll make it through that game.

“If Nsemba is not there, he comes in at full height and is a good tackler. This is at top speed, but when you slow down you think it will clearly make contact with the head.

“It’s a lot of responsibility, but players have to expect a player’s height to drop, which I don’t think is fair.”

However Cunningham believes, given the current climate around head contact, players have a responsibility not to make contact.

“We all know where we stand with head contact and defensive players have a responsibility not to make contact. then her strong touch. It’s the level of contact that goes into it.

“Look, maybe the falling player will help him, maybe save him, but it’s going to be a rough few days.”
