The reality of living in Cornwall during the summer season

Cornwall is home to some of the most stunning beaches in the world and as residents we are lucky enough to have them on our doorstep every day of the year. However, the impending summer sun boom means one thing for the locals – a flood of tourists.

Who wouldn’t want to enjoy a hot day on golden sands with incredible views – in the UK? But that’s the problem – which means summer can be a stressful time, forcing locals to avoid the county’s hotspots to avoid the crowds.

It’s not that the locals don’t want them here. Ask any small business owner who is looking forward to the sales boom. Tourists also have a very large and positive impact on the local economy, with many businesses relying on the profit they make during the season to stay afloat during the quiet winter.

However, we are no strangers to the less than perfect effect that the tourism sector can have as well. The high volume of tourists flooding the sought-after destinations in the county has a paralyzing effect. Our emergency services are in demand, pollution and litter are increasing and parking is becoming almost impossible.

The roads get clogged and a small minority can be very, well, rude. Although, with the ongoing cost of living crisis nationally, there are fears we may not reap the benefits of a busy summer this year, which leaves Cornwall, well, worse than ever.
