100km/h driver penalty halted amid street racing fears at Sutton Coldfield Bypass

A driver clocked at more than 100mph amid street racing concerns along a busy Birmingham road has been banned from driving. Keiran Stewart was spotted speeding in excess of 100mph by police responding to racing complaints along the A38 Sutton Coldfield bypass.

The 27-year-old, from Telford, was pulled over by officers in the early hours of January 27 this year. This week, he admitted dangerous driving and received a 20-week suspended sentence.

He was also disqualified from driving for 18 months and must take an extended test to hold a driving license in the future. He was further ordered to carry out 100 hours of community service over 12 months and fined more than £230.

Police said he was “banned from driving and ordered to pay hundreds of pounds” as they “continue efforts to stop reckless driving on our roads”. Officers were responding to “racing complaints – while people watching” on the A38 when there was noise.

Stewart was sentenced at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (May 28). It comes as police vow to take action with partners to “keep the roads safe” through Operation Triton and Operation Hercules.

Operation Hercules is the ongoing campaign which aims to target those involved in street racing and car cruising where vehicles are driven in an “antisocial or dangerous manner”. High Court bans remain in place in Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall.

They prohibit people from driving, being a passenger or a rider at an assembly where there is motor racing or motor stunts or other dangerous or obstructive driving. Police asked anyone with information about street racing to report it on Live Chat on the force’s website or call 101. They urged anyone in an emergency to “always call 999”.
