How to watch: Free coverage confirmed for the 1895 Cup Final

In a week’s time, rugby league fans will descend on Wembley again with the men’s and women’s Challenge Cup finals plus the 1895 Cup final, and now a TV deal has been confirmed for that 1895 Cup clash between Wakefield Trinity and Sheffield Eagles.

Despite tickets being sold as a triple header, with the Women’s Final, Men’s Final and then the 1895 Cup Final all being played on the same day, there was actually no TV coverage of the final game.

That’s it until now, as a deal has now been struck to feature the game in SuperLeague+, meaning all three finals will be available to watch for fans who can’t make it to Wembley.

With Sheffield looking to become the first team to lift the trophy for a second time and Wakefield Trinity playing at Wembley for the first time in nearly 50 years, it’s a huge game and it’s only right that it gets its own coverage.

This season marked the first in which the 1895 Cup took a new format, with group stages and then a knockout system. Wakefield Trinity overcame their pre-tournament favoritism to reach the final and now the club’s fans will be able to watch their team from the comfort of their own homes following today’s news.

SuperLeague+ will host the 1895 Cup final with the new free streaming service for everyone, regardless of whether they have an active subscription to the platform. All fans will need to do is create an account and register membership, and the game will be watched for free via the app or website.

A statement on the Sheffield Eagles website confirmed the news: “The 2024 AB Sundecks 1895 Cup Final between Sheffield Eagles and Wakefield Trinity will be broadcast live on SuperLeague+ next Saturday.

“The match, which kicks off at 5.45pm, will be broadcast live from Wembley Stadium for free to all SL+ members, whether or not they have a subscription to the Betfred Super League coverage that has been available all season.”

The statement continued, explaining the significance of the game for both sides: “Sheffield Eagles were the inaugural winners in 2019, defeating Widnes Vikings in the final, with Anthony Thackeray, their current captain, winning the first Ray French man of the match award. .

“For Wakefield Trinity, this will be their first appearance at Wembley since the 1979 Challenge Cup Final when they were beaten by Widnes, and their seventh overall.

“They were Challenge Cup winners against Hull in 1960, Huddersfield in 1962 and twice against Wigan in 1946 and 1963 before losing to Leeds in the famous 1968 Watersplash final.”

Trinity already beat Sheffield Eagles earlier this season in the league and will be hoping to do the double and take home silverware for the first time in a generation.
