Bevan French described captaining the club as an “honour” as Wigan warriors defeated Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

French was named captain in the absence of Liam Farrell, who Matt Peet rested ahead of next Saturday’s Betfred Challenge Cup final against Warrington at Wembley Stadium.

As he led the team to a 19-18 Betfred Super League victory over Warrington, French said: “It was an honor to manage a team like Wigan who have such a rich history and great captains before them.”

French added: “We had a team meeting earlier in the week when the team was eliminated and I was told then. It was a shock but now it’s a privilege to say I’ve captained such a big club.”

Giving an honest reflection on the performance, French said: “Obviously we’re very happy to get the two points but we’re quite disappointed with our performance. Even though we weren’t at our best, we continued to show up for each other for 80 years, which is something to be happy about.”

Of Warrington Wolves, French said: “They were on a roll and they were in front of their home support again. Even if they played six or seven debutants, these players will have been dreaming their whole lives at that point, so we expected nothing less than a fast start. Even when we went down to 12, we hung in there together, which is something we can be happy about.”

Jacob Douglas made his Warriors debut in the win and of the teenage winger, French said: “It’s always a special occasion when someone makes their debut. I’m glad he got the chance because he’s someone who’s always looking to improve, he’s eager and he has a big future ahead of him.”

Looking ahead to the Challenge Cup final, French said: “It will be a different game next week against a different team in a different atmosphere. Wembley is such a famous stadium so it will be a special occasion to play in front of the Wigan fans there – I’m really looking forward to it.”
