M18 shut down live updates as ‘police incident’ stops all traffic near Doncaster

Traffic has been brought to a complete standstill on the M18 near Doncaster.

Motorists are experiencing delays in both directions of the motorway between J4 for the A630 at West Moor Link and J5 for the M180 at Doncaster North Services. Traffic was stopped due to a “police-led incident”, a spokesman for National Highways Yorkshire confirmed.




The circumstances of the police incident are currently unknown and it is not clear when the road will be reopened. Yorkshire Live has contacted South Yorkshire Police for further information.

Traffic relaxation

M18 reopens

The M18 has reopened in both directions near Doncaster.

The highway was closed for about two hours while police dealt with a report of a safety concern.

A National Highways Yorkshire spokesman said: “The M18 has reopened in both directions between J5 (M180) and J4 (A630) following a police-led incident.

“Thank you for your patience, please have a safe trip.”

Drivers stuck for two hours say ‘I’ve never seen anything like it’

Kim Usher, who is currently stuck in gridlocked traffic on the M18, told Yorkshire Live she had been stuck for over two hours.

Some drivers tried to turn around and drive the wrong way on the motorway to avoid the queues, however South Yorkshire Police advised against this.

Kim said: “I’ve never seen anything like this before and I’ve been driving for 25 years. Such bad driving.”

Police statement

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Please be aware that the M18 is currently closed at junction five in both directions following a safety concern.

“There is significant traffic at the stop and motorists are advised to avoid the area and plan alternative routes.

“There have also been reports of cars stuck in traffic trying to avoid queues by turning around and driving the wrong way on the hard shoulder. Drivers should stay put and leave the side clear for emergency vehicles.”

“No indication when the road will reopen”

A National Highways spokesman said there was “no indication” when the M18 would reopen near Doncaster.

The motorway was closed in both directions between J4 for the A630 at West Moor Link and J5 for the M180 at Doncaster North Services due to a “police incident”.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, a National Highways spokesman said: “The M18 is closed in both directions between J5 (M180) and J4 (A630).

“This is due to an incident led by the Police. There is no indication at this time when the road will reopen.

“Expect delays on the approaches to both intersections.”
