Under-fire Leeds Rhinos man wins plaudits after ‘best performance of the season’

Leeds Rhinos signed Matt Frawley in the summer as one of a number of high profile overseas signings. Frawley joins fellow recruits Brodie Croft, Paul Momirovski and Lachie Miller, all of whom are expected to help push the Rhinos into the top six in Super League.

To varying degrees, they all had an inconsistent start to life at Leeds. Croft has been the biggest hit so far, despite missing time due to injury. Similarly, Momirovski has looked solid on the pitch but has had some unfortunate luck in terms of fitness.

Lachie Miller blew hot and cold, looking electric in possession, but his lack of high-level Rugby League experience showed at times. And then there’s Matt Frawley.

Frawley was meant to be Leeds’ playmaker this season but was heavily criticized by fans for his performances. He was dropped from the Leeds side that won against London and still has a lot to do to win over the Leeds crowd.

However, Frawley produced a much improved performance in Leeds’ win over Castleford and fans will be hoping he can continue to show improvement.

Speaking after Leeds’ win over Castleford, Leeds head coach Rohan Smith singled out Frawley for praise in a strong overall performance for the team.

Asked if he thought this was Matt Frawley’s best performance in a Leeds Rhinos shirt, Smith agreed. He believes that while Frawley has performed solidly overall, his try-scoring performance yesterday was a real step forward in his game.

“Probably. Yeah probably. I think he’s had some good, solid performances where he’s gotten to kind of play short today and use his lead runner today, when Rhyse (Martin) scores, it looks like a good play and, obviously, he found his own trial with good support from Sangare.

“So he came up with some really good plays. He had a very good week in training. Both him and Brodie stepped up this week and took a lot of responsibility on the implementation of the offense, what we’re going to do, but also making it happen in practice, really stepping up before. So it was nice to see it in action on the field as well.”

Frawley, who had a previous spell in Super League with Huddersfield Giants, has played 12 times for the Rhinos this season. The only match he missed was the one against London. So far he has two tries and four assists in a Rhinos shirt.
