Kate Garraway takes the family on a ‘bittersweet’ holiday to Cornwall

TV star Kate Garraway has opened up about her ‘bittersweet’ holiday in Cornwall – five months after the death of husband Derek Draper. The Good Morning Britain presenter took her children to the Duchy in what she described as an “annual tradition”.

Kate shared a video with her Instagram followers showing her packed car before she and her family headed to Cornwall. The mother-of-two explained that the holiday was “bittersweet” as the vehicle would have been perfect for her husband to travel with as the Volvo had “plenty of space for a hoist and wheelchair in the back”.

Mr Draper died aged 56 in January after battling extreme complications from Covid. Despite her mixed emotions, Garraway shared her excitement for the trip, having not owned a car since her previous Volvo was stolen in 2020.

In an Instagram video, Garraway said: “So first trip to Cornwall, our annual family trip with mum, dad and about 30 other Garraways – stay away from Cornwall. First time in my lovely new Volvo, so excited.”

And she joked: “So we have four suitcases, for four adults, we have quite a bit of extra food because they don’t sell food in Cornwall so it’s important to take it with us. And we have a cool box full of lots of fridge stuff my mom likes to take, some alcohol, and lots of art stuff my mom likes to do with her nieces and nephews and the little ones.

“So, we’re ready to go. I can still see behind me. Oh my god, I forgot, and three surfboards. Brilliant.”

To honor the occasion, the 57-year-old asked fans for help naming her new ride. She said on social media: “Haven’t had a car since Vickie Volvo was stolen and Percy Peugeot had to go back but thanks to some amazing friends who helped me borrow a new @volvocaruk C90 – love it absolute! Not an ad, just a passion.

“Feels like old times with hands on a wheel @volvocars though bittersweet as this would have been the perfect car to get Derek in and out with plenty of room for a hoist and wheelchair in the back.

“But I know he would agree and he came just in time to take my mum and dad away on our annual trip to Cornwall with all the Garraways. Dad is slightly tense about me, but relieved that he beeps every time he nears an obstacle. Now you just have to find a name for it? Hope everyone is having a lovely Saturday xxx.”

Fans were quick to comment on the post, suggesting Garraway honor her late husband by naming the car after him. One person wrote: “You should call the car Derek as he would have liked it and hope you Darcey and Billy and the rest of the family have a brilliant relaxing holiday you all deserve x” .

Another person said: “I hope you guys have a great time together OK so name it Volvo as you already said Derek would approve and you love naming after Derekxx.”

A third posted: “Have a blast calling the car after Derek x,” while a fourth social media user said: “If you had a nickname for Derek it might be a good one .”

Another fan of the ITV presenter posted: “A name with Derek in mind would be nice.” Garraway gave fans a video tour of her new car with her father, who could be seen sitting by the trunk.
