The long-serving Sheffield Wednesday ace has joined the League One club despite a contract offer

A Sheffield Wednesday star has been tipped to leave the League One club this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday offered seven players new contracts last month, with Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer the only two so far to put pen to paper.

Josh Windass had already admitted that Danny Rohl’s extension could be the key to him staying at the club, and it seems that would have been the case for most of the out-of-contract players.

One player whose contract offer came as a surprise to many is Cameron Dawson, who managed just 18 league appearances last term.

Dawson made his senior debut for the Owls in 2013 but failed to establish himself as a regular, with his most appearances in a league campaign coming in 2018-19 when he made 26 starts.

The 28-year-old lost his place when James Beadle arrived on loan in January and was expected to leave Hillsborough on a free agent this summer.

However, he has been offered new terms and it remains to be seen whether he will commit to them.

Despite Wednesday being Dawson’s boyhood club, journalist Rob Staton believes the goalkeeper could leave in search of regular first-team football.

Cameron Dawson asked to join local rivals

Speaking on the Football Heaven podcast, Staton said: “We’re supposed to be trying to get James Beadle back and that’s more likely now that they’ve stayed up I think. There is no reason to think why this could not happen. Unless someone gives him a huge loan fee, so you’d think he’d come back.

“So what is Cam Dawson doing? Does he want to go somewhere else and start over or be an understudy again? It’s hard when you’ve grown up playing for a club, but I would have thought in his mind that a clean break is best.

“He could go to League One clubs and be a real asset. I mean, why not? Barnsley might be a good shout. Rotherham would be another. He is a very good goalkeeper.”

Cameron Dawson’s exit would benefit both sides

Cameron Dawson is set to turn 29 next month, and while goaltenders can play until much older, he’s not going to get any better.

The shot stopper has been a solid support but there is certainly no chance of him forcing his way back into the starting line-up and he would certainly prefer to play regular football.

Dawson is believed to be earning over £8,000-a-week and offloading him could be a real boost ahead of the transfer window.

The 28-year-old should opt for a move to League One and become a truly important player for a club pushing for promotion.
