A day after the school closed for good, the name Birmingham-Southern College is still worn across the chest of the school’s baseball team and making headlines across the US.

Despite the school closing its doors due to financial difficulties, the Panthers defeated Randolph-Macon 9-7 on Saturday with a home run in Eastlake, Ohio, to stay alive in the College World Series Division III.

They completed their victory in dramatic fashion when, with the score tied 7-7 in the bottom of the ninth inning, first baseman Jackson Webster hit a two-run home run to continue the school’s “Cinderella Story.”

It sparked delirious scenes in crowds and watch parties in Birmingham as Webster was mobbed by his team-mates who were all waiting for him on set.

“Baseball wonder, huh?” Webster said, according to the NCAA. “The storybook is not over. It’s a tough pill to swallow. We have nothing to fall back on, so we take the field as if we have nothing to lose. And a team that has nothing to lose is a hard team to beat.”

The Panthers had jumped out to an early 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the third, but faltered in the middle of the innings after a series of errors and trailed 7-4 going into the eighth. After losing their opening game on Friday, they had to win it to stay in the tournament and even their head coach, Jan Weisberg, had doubts.

“You had a feeling that’s how it was going to end,” he said afterward, according to the NCAA. “What this team in particular has been through … with everything that’s been hanging over our heads, there had to be some thinking.

“I’ll admit it happened to me for a brief second between innings. I started thinking about what am I going to say, am I going to hold them together? And I was just like stop, stop.”

Then all three of their hitters reached the plate in the ninth inning, giving Webster a chance to seal the victory, though on his first swing he misfired so badly that he beat his chest to- and apologize. He connected on the third pitch, though, and sent it over the left-field wall for a famous victory.

The Panthers will play Wisconsin-Whitewater on Sunday at 3pm ET and if they win that game, they will play again on Monday for a spot in the national championship game. If they lose, it will mark the end of an unlikely run despite the difficult circumstances.

Birmingham-Southern was a private liberal arts school located in Birmingham, Alabama that opened its doors in 1856. In March, the school announced it would close and then the baseball team went on a miraculous run to to earn a place in College DIII. World Series with the help of a GoFundMe page.

Along with the GoFundMe page, Topps announced earlier this week that it is producing trading cards featuring the Birmingham-Southern baseball team, with proceeds going to the program. Topps also said it is giving away some cards to “distribute to players, friends and family.”
