Manchester United legend Sammy McIlroy makes emotional plea to save sinking club Morecambe – Man United News And Transfer News

Manchester United legend Sammy McIlroy has launched an impassioned plea to save Morecambe amid their woes, which currently threaten the club’s existence.

According to The Mirror, Morecambe have no manager, no chief executive and just five players on their books. It’s an extremely dire situation and there are calls for owner Jason Whittingham to sell himself in an effort to give the team a chance at survival.

McIlroy previously led Morecambe during one of their most successful periods. The former United man guided the Shrimpers to the Football League in 2007.

He spoke to The Mirror about Morecamb’s woes and said: “The day I brought Morecambe into the League by winning the play-off final against Exeter in 2007 was one of my greatest days in football. Our coach broke down on the way to Wembley and I remember Exeter’s executive coach with the windows tinted, passing us as we were marooned in a sort of wasteland on the outskirts of London.

“Luckily our driver got our bus started again but when we got out to look at the Wembley pitch the Exeter players were already there in their trendy suits and sunglasses as their manager Paul Tisdale was best friend with the owner of Ted Baker. fashion chain.”

“We managed to do a deal with a menswear shop called Slater in Manchester and got our Wembley suits for £25 each. Our fans were heavily outnumbered and I remember saying to the physio, ‘They’re here expecting to climb those steps and get promoted’, but we’ve put a spanner in their works.”

He explained that on that occasion against Exeter, Morecambe were the underdogs by a significant margin, but they were not scared or disheartened.

The players fought bravely and eventually prevailed as they gained entry into the league.

The 69-year-old added: “It would break my heart to see Morecambe thrown out of the League, having points deducted or, at worst, going to the wall because it’s such a long way back.”

He warned those associated with Morecambe not to rely entirely on former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, who hails from the same town. According to Mcllroy, Fury may not be Morecambe’s savior as he is currently focused on boxing business and regaining his title.

Hopefully someone in the business community will step in and see the potential. It’s an amazing little club and they might not have a huge following in the city, but the supporters are loyal and passionate about their club.”

Mcllroy spent 11 years at Old Trafford and was Sir Matt Busby’s last signing in July 1969.

In his United debut, a 17-year-old McIlroy scored once and assisted twice at Maine Road, quickly endearing himself to the club’s supporters.

He went on to make 419 appearances for United, scoring 71 goals in the process. He left for Stike City in February 1982 for a record fee of £350,000.
