Who and what the Blue Army want from a manager as Enzo Maresca leaves Leicester City

Change, big names and possibly downright delusional. These are the hallmarks of what kind of managers Leicester City supporters want in the current situation. Although it has yet to be confirmed, the exit of the Italian coach leaves the King Power in a strange position: on the one hand, it gives the club the chance to bring in a manager who we know can help avoid relegation. However, on the other hand, it would be the beginning of another new project.

A project that Leicester cannot afford. However, the Blue Army have spoken: Foxes of Leicester asked supporters who they wanted and the answers came in droves, but of course they focused on certain names. I will list the main contenders and what they should bring to the table.

I ran through the numbers in the post and there is little agreement on who would make the best replacement, while there are also some odd suggestions in an overwhelming 4-way debate. Here are the main contenders.

With seven mentions each at the time of writing, this trio represents what supporters really want: either inspiration or grim realism. Potter is a big name with big potential, yet it is Corberan who shares Maresca’s patient possession style. Moyes isn’t flashy, but it’s currently free.

With six mentions, RVN represents a vision: another inexperienced coach who can be given a project, a name to build and time to impose his vision. Although not a big name in the managerial world, Nistelrooy would be an interesting addition to the King Power and would share the same stylistic preference as the Italian.

The three least mentioned with just two each (though there was a passing call for Will Still). Garcia isn’t a flashy name – already committed to our OHL sister club – while De Zerbi is almost an impossibility given his career trajectory. “Ole” is an interesting one to see mentioned: steer clear Foxes.

Supporters – myself included – need to be realistic. Potter, De Zerbi and possibly even Moyes will be ruled out for this season at least. With financial struggles due to PSR hampering our ability to spend big wages, we are more likely to see a manager with a career to build, a project to pursue or simply because of their price.

This is where Nistelrooy comes to the fore for Leicester: a young aspiring coach behind the coaching of one of Europe’s most exciting clubs – PSV Eindhoven. The former player knows the game, plays an attractive brand of possession football and can continue the existing project without sacrificing paying exorbitant compensation or throwing money at an experienced manager like Moyes.

The Dutchman could be a gamble due to his fiery attitude and inexperience, but he still offers an exciting prospect of rebuilding Leicester City with his name sure to attract some talent to the Foxes’ door. The King’s Power should make this bet. And Corberan offers an interesting extension to the existing project and of course already has a good background in English football: another good shout.
