How much is Alvaro Fernandez’s release clause at Benfica

Manchester United have already been active in the transfer market this summer, cashing in on a defender surplus to requirements.

Left-back was the only position Manchester United were short of options in 2023/24, but Erik ten Hag was unconvinced by Alvaro Fernandez.

Fernandez was sent out on loan to Spanish side Granada before Benfica moved in January to sign him on loan for them.

At the end of last month, Benfica activated a clause to sign Fernandez on a permanent basis for a fee of £5m.

Alvaro Fernandez release clause

Benfica view former Real Madrid academy prospect Alvaro Fernandez as an investment, tying him to a contract until 2029.

As is customary for players from Portugal, Benfica also added a strong release clause to Fernandez’s contract.

A Bola report Fernandez’s contract contains a €50m release clause, which equates to £42m.

The release clause is designed to ensure Fernandez isn’t sold on the cheap, setting a high bar for future negotiations.

Fernandez was named a future star

Alvaro Fernandez played in 16 matches for Benfica during his loan spell, with seven of those matches coming as a starter.

But next season, Fernandez is not expected to be the first choice, he will have to earn his place in the Benfica team.

Asked about comparisons with former Benfica Spanish left-back Alejandro Grimaldo, his former youth coach Albert Gil told A Bola that it will take some time.

He said: “Alvaro is very talented and belongs to the group of the best youngsters in Spain. Even with a different profile, I think he has the conditions to be Benfica’s future defender, in two, three, four years he will be at that level.”
