Planning Cornwall: New South Crofty mine buildings among latest proposals

Plans for new mining buildings at South Crofty and a 1,000-panel solar farm at a country club are among the latest planning applications submitted to Cornwall Council.

Each week over 100 applications are validated by Cornwall Council and we have selected some of the most interesting proposals. All planning applications submitted to the council must be validated and are available for public inspection. Anyone is also allowed to submit comments on the applications – either in support or objection.

Most applications are decided by council planning officers under delegated powers. However, some applications will be referred to elected councilors who sit on planning committees. No dates have been set for the determination of the planning applications below. These can be viewed by accessing the planning portal on Cornwall Council’s website.

New mining buildings at South Crofty

Cornish Metals is seeking pre-advice to build a two-storey building and a single-storey building on what is believed to be derelict land at Bartles Foundry in South Crofty Mine, on land currently occupied by a Cornwall Council depot, Dudnance Lane, Pool.

The proposed facilities form a central gateway to the ‘Cooks Kitchen’ well. The proposals include essential support facilities for miners, office space, engineering workshops, shops and associated staff and visitor parking, vehicle access and landscaping. It would mean demolishing three existing buildings.

The area holds one of the highest quality undeveloped tin resources globally and has a very long mining history, with first recorded production beginning in 1592 and continuing until 1998.
