Coventry’s sports ground is set for a major upgrade to encourage people to ‘get active’

A sports pitch in Coventry is to be upgraded in a bid to encourage people to ‘get active’. It is part of a series of projects financed by the Outbreak Management Fund (COMF).

Councilors say the Jardine Crescent sports ground, also known as the Ponderosa, has been under-used in recent years, but the completion of a 700m footpath has meant many more people can enjoy using the Tile Hill green space.

Plans are now in place to install new lighted bollards around the Ponderosa Trail. A new pond was also planned to help boost diversity, Coventry City Council said.

Improvements to the border path at Morris Common in Stoke Heath are also planned. The work will help raise the footpath outside the park’s occasional buffer zones and protect the path surface, Coventry City Council said.

Coventry City Council told CoventryLive that it has received £750,000 in funding from COMF to improve the city’s green spaces post-Covid. The work will take place over the coming weeks and is expected to be completed by the end of July.

Cllr Kamran Caan, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Sport, said: “Our parks and open spaces are wonderful places to be active, the health benefits are well known and I am delighted that we can bring these improvements to both Jardine Crescent and Morris Common. “

He added: “Joggers and walkers regularly use the paths and they are people of all ages. It’s fantastic to see.”
