Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted to sign the Wonderkid for Man Utd, he has now won nine trophies since then

We all know how close Jude Bellingham was to signing for Manchester United in 2020 by taking a tour of the club’s training ground.

At the weekend we saw Jude Bellingham win his first Champions League trophy in his first season at Real Madrid, having traveled the long way to sign for the Spanish champions via Borussia Dortmund.

But Bellingham wasn’t the only player in Real Madrid’s squad at the weekend that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted to bring to Manchester United.

Also a key target for Solskjaer’s United has been French midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, who has been an integral part of the Real Madrid squad since joining.

Manchester United wanted Eduardo Camavinga

Manchester United tracked Eduardo Camavinga in the summer of 2021 after watching the French prodigy’s spell at Rennes.

Fabrizio Romano explained via YouTube at the time: “Manchester United, in the last five or six days, have been very serious about the Camavinga deal.

“They started to open discussions with Camavinga’s camp and people close to Rennes to understand the price. They hope to do a deal for around 30 or 35 million euros”.

However, Real Madrid also pushed for Camavinga, while Manchester United’s big summer investment was £73m winger Jadon Sancho, opting not to sign a central midfielder.

Real completed a deal for Camavinga at the end of the window for £34m, a substantial fee for an 18-year-old, but one who has already made his international debut in France.

It was seen as a smart investment and perhaps if Manchester United had pushed harder and earlier, Camavinga would have played at Old Trafford.

Camavinga was very successful for Real Madrid

Eduardo Camavinga has already repaid Real Madrid’s investment and then some. It already looks like a bargain.

Camavinga has now won various trophies for Real in three years; Champions League (x2), La Liga (x2), Spanish Super Cup (x2), Copa del Rey, Super Cup, Club World Cup.

He also did it in a very versatile role. Although he has played in his preferred central midfield position this season, in previous campaigns he has had to occupy the left-back position.

Camavinga’s success has been remarkable because he has already won so much and is still only 21 years old.

He won’t regret missing out on a move to Manchester United, but the Red Devils should bemoan the fact they didn’t push harder for his signature.
