Rob’s last wish: The development of the Rob Burrow MND Center will start today in Leeds

The groundbreaking of the new Rob Burrow Center for MND will take place today as planned, despite his sad passing yesterday, with Burrow’s former club Leeds Rhinos revealing it was one of Burrow’s last requests.

Leeds Rhinos have confirmed Burrow’s passing and the former Rhinos star has succumbed to his battle with motor neurone disease after four-and-a-half years, passing away peacefully aged 41 surrounded by his family.

This news was confirmed in a statement from the club, which also explained that Burrow fell ill earlier in the week, which led to his admission to Pinderfields Hospital, where he will spend his final days.

The statement also confirmed that today’s planned opening of the new Rob Burrow Center for MND will continue, at Rob’s request, a testament to the team-first attitude he has shown throughout his career and the fight against the disease.

More than £6m of the £7m needed has been raised to help build the center which will help care for and ensure people with MND and their families have a safe haven as they battle the disease.

A legendary career on the field that included eight Grand Final wins, three World Club Challenges and two Challenge Cups was just the beginning for Rob Burrow.

He was destined to do more with his life and his horrific diagnosis allowed him to start his ‘second career’ as a fundraiser and inspiration to all, raising awareness of motor neurone disease to unimaginable heights.

Leeds Rhinos have paid special tribute to the incredible work he has done following his diagnosis with motor neurone disease in December 2019, with Burrow serving as a “beacon of hope” as described by best mate Kevin Sinfield.

The Rhinos’ statement said: “Following his MND diagnosis in December 2019, Burrow and his family made the decision to open their doors to show the impact of the disease and raise awareness and funds for the MND community. Burrow has since inspired two award-winning documentaries, written a best-selling autobiography, hosted an award-winning podcast and received a CBE from HRH Prince William at AMT Headingley in January 2023.

“Together with his friend and former team-mate Kevin Sinfield, Burrow has inspired almost £20 million in fundraising across the UK and Ireland. This included raising over £6 million to build the Rob Burrow Center for MND in Leeds as a lasting legacy for those who follow him in their own personal battles with the disease.”

They would also confirm that today’s shovel-in-the-ground revolution at the new site at Seacroft Hospital will go ahead, at Rob’s request.

“Fittingly, as a tribute to Rob’s incredible work, the opening of the new Rob Burrow Center for MND at Seacroft Hospital on Monday will take place as planned at Rob’s request.”
