Three foods can destroy your gut health, says health expert

Finding what’s good for your stomach can be difficult when you’re trying to fuel up for a workout. While they’re great for gains, gym favorites like protein shakes and pre-workout drinks may not always be right for your gut, according to one expert.

Despite their popularity, these products can lead to discomfort or even bloating for some. Bowel health expert Chris Dubberley from the Incontinence Shop has shared his tips and advice.

Protein bars

Chris said: “Handy but hard on the stomach, protein bars are often full of isolated fiber and sugars that don’t digest well and instead ferment in the gut to cause bloating, gas or diarrhoea. Ingredients like chicory root fiber and maltitol, commonly found in these bars, are notorious for upsetting more sensitive stomachs.

“Athletes should be especially careful when consuming protein bars to avoid digestive problems during exercise. I suggest trying protein bars with whole ingredients and minimal added sugars to help your gut health.”

Whey protein powder

Chris said: “A varied diet is key to maintaining healthy gut flora, so overloading on protein powder can throw off the gut’s microbial balance. The added sugars and flavors of some protein powders can also disrupt your blood sugar levels and balance, promoting the growth of harmful bacteria in your gut. While protein is necessary for muscle repair, relying too much on supplements could lead to a low-fiber diet and poor gut health.”
