Drivers face £70 fines for not parking close enough to curb in Sheffield crackdown

DRIVER in Sheffield have been warned they could be fined £70 for parking over curbs, on cycle paths or if they are not parked close enough to the kerb.

Under the new rules, which are being introduced to help make the city’s road safer, tickets can also be issued for double parking and HGV drivers who stop with their wheels on the pavement.

Fines for obstructive parking could previously only be issued by the police, but the changes will allow traffic officers to issue tickets, Council said.

The new rules come into effect on Monday, May 20. The council explained that the changes were introduced following a recent consultation in which more than half of respondents had experienced vehicles blocking their roads. 70% of respondents also said they had experienced vehicles blocking pedestrians, dropped curbs and double parking.

Richard Eyre, Director of Streetscene and Regulation at Sheffield City Council said: “The aim of these new enforcement rules is to keep pedestrians and cyclists safe on Sheffield’s roads, and these new rules allow the council to enforce against obstructive parking which previously could only be enforced by the police.

“Double parking, for example, can impede other road users, including emergency services vehicles, while parking in front of left curbs can endanger people who are visually impaired or have reduced mobility, as well as affecting drivers trying to enter or leave a building.”

Motorists found to be breaking the new enforcement rules and causing obstruction to other road users could face a £70 fine, reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days.
