Wigan Warriors have been handed a double ban for the Challenge Cup final

Wigan Warriors have had the bad news confirmed that two of their first team players will be suspended for the Challenge Cup final against Warrington Wolves on Saturday.

The Cherry and Whites faced Warrington in Super League on Saturday and the two managers opted for different approaches, with Sam Burgess rotating strongly and fielding four debutants while Wigan were relatively full.

It’s something Matt Peet will now regret after both Adam Keighran and Tyler Dupree were handed Grade D charges involving three-game bans and a £250 fine each.

Keighran was expected to be suspended after being sent off for a high shot on Arron Lindop, while Dupree headbutted Sam Powell while on the floor playing the ball.

Both men are now set to miss Saturday’s Challenge Cup final, although Wigan Warriors are entitled to an appeal, which they are likely to address with an Operational Rules Tribunal already scheduled for tomorrow night.

Losing just one player to suspension ahead of a Challenge Cup final would be devastating, but losing two key members is brutal, however, that’s the price Wigan Warriors paid to claim victory in Super League.

Sam Burgess will probably be the happier of the two managers now, despite the one-point loss, knowing the challenge at Wembley just got a little easier and his players are also well rested.

The official charges for the Wigan Warriors pair are both grade D, with Dupree cited for a head and Keighran for head contact, both charges carrying the same three-game ban and a £250 fine.

Brad O’Neill was also charged but only escaped with a fine as he was given a Grade A charge for making late contact on the passer, the pimp striking Josh Drinkwater early in the first half.

Warrington escaped without any charges, with Wigan Warriors effectively the only Super League team to receive any ban.

However, there was a ban for Sheffield Eagles player Matty Marsh, who was handed a two-game ban and fined £125 for a dangerous throw/lift. His case will be heard at the Operational Rules Tribunal tomorrow if he appeals, as will Wigan Warriors duo Keighran and Dupree.
