Motorists called after a possible road traffic incident led to a car crash in Wakefield

Two drivers were cited last week after a possible traffic incident led to a car crash in Wakefield, according to police.

Wakefield police and firefighters responded to the two-car crash at the intersection of Salem Street and Chapman Road just after 1 p.m. on May 29, police said in a news release. At the scene, they found an SUV had crashed into a fence along Chapman Road.

A wrecked sedan with significant damage was also located nearby, police said. The driver of the SUV — a 33-year-old man from Nashua, New Hampshire — was taken to a local hospital with injuries, but no other injuries were reported.

The initial investigation indicated both vehicles were traveling northbound on I-95 but exited the freeway after the drivers were involved in a possible traffic incident, police said. The SUV eventually crossed into oncoming traffic, leading to the crash.

The driver of the SUV was cited for driving to endanger and a marked lanes violation, police said. The driver of the sedan — a 38-year-old Marblehead man — was cited for leaving the scene of an accident with property damage and driving with a suspended license.

Wakefield police were still investigating the crash Friday night. No other information, including the identities of the drivers, has been released.
