Homes in Keresley were left without water after youths witnessed brawls

Some households in Keresley were left without water during Sunday’s heat wave due to a damaged hydrant. As temperatures rose, local residents in the area were without water due to damage to a fire hydrant on the corner of Somers Road, Charity Road and Beaumont Road.

Posts on social media showed several youths frolicking in the huge river of water yesterday afternoon (June 2). But Severn Trent warned of the “serious” impact of “misuse” of hydrants.

Sophie Evans Young, Regional Director of Water at Severn Trent, said: “We received reports yesterday of a hydrant being misused in Keresley, causing some supply issues for a small number of customers in the area. We dispatched an engineer who fixed the issue and supply has now been returned to all affected customers.”

She went on to say: “The misuse of hydrants is a serious problem which can affect the level and quality of supply to people in the local area, including vulnerable people. We strongly urge anyone who observes potential misuse of the water network to contact us at water regulations. @severntrent.co.uk or to visit www.stwater.co.uk/my-supply/tap-water/hydrant-misuse/ where there is a form that can be completed.”

This is not the first time that problems have arisen at the local level. During the 2022 heatwave, there were a number of incidents of fire crews being threatened while trying to fix a hydrant in Wood End, near Coventry.
