The award winners were named for The Sixteen’s Croydon Minster – Inside Croydon concert

Congratulations to Margaret Siudek, winner of our latest exclusive contest for Inside Croydon paying subscribers.

She wins a pair of tickets to next Monday’s gala concert by The Sixteen Choir at Croydon Minster.

In second place is John Chandler, who receives a CD of the choir’s works.

“I never win anything,” Margaret said as she submitted to our little quiz, proving herself wrong.

Statistics show that you are more likely to win in one of the Inside Croydon competitions with prizes as a subscriber than winning the National Lottery or winning the jackpot on TV Who wants to be a millionaire. Margaret was a loyal subscriber Inside Croydon from November 2017…

Now he will be able to enjoy a concert performed by a choir regarded as one of the best in the world.

The Sixteen played their first concert in 1979 under the direction of founder and conductor Harry Christophers CBE. Their pioneering work since then has had a profound impact on the performance of choral music and has attracted a wide new audience, not least as ‘The Voices of Classic FM’ and through the sacred music series on BBC television.

The Sixteen’s vintage voices and instruments are at home in over five centuries of music, a breadth reflected in their annual choral pilgrimage to Britain’s great cathedrals and sacred spaces, regular appearances in the world’s leading concert halls and award-winning recordings. .

Recent highlights include the world premiere of James MacMillan’s Stabat mater, commissioned for The Sixteen by the Genesis Foundation, an ambitious Handel oratorio series.

Whether performing a simple medieval hymn or expressing the complex musical and emotional language of a contemporary choral composition, The Sixteen do so with qualities common to all great ensembles.

Concert in Croydon: Soon the sixteen will be playing at the Minster

Tonal warmth, rhythmic precision and immaculate intonation are clearly essential to the mix. But it’s the courage and intensity with which The Sixteen make music that speaks most to so many people.

The Sixteen’s program for the 2024 Choral Pilgrimage, when they perform at Croydon Minster, will feature Orlande de Lassus, alongside works by Josquin, Casulana and Bob Chilcott.

The visit to Croydon Minster will also include The Sixteen’s popular Choral Pilgrimage Choral Workshops, a rare and rewarding opportunity for keen amateur singers to explore a variety of music inspired by The Sixteen’s own performances.

Under the guidance of expert leaders, workshops include advice on vocal technique (breathing technique, refreshing warm-ups and voice production), as well as performance interpretation and historical context.

Tickets for the concert and workshops are still available. Full booking details can be found by visiting the website here.

Winner Margaret, runner-up John and several other participants all knew the answer to our question… The sixteen used Vermeer’s version Girl With A Pearl Earring in their Minster concert poster. Name the actress from South Croydon who starred in the 2004 film based on that portrayal.

The answer, of course, is Joanna Scanlon.
