Plans for further speed bumps have been scrapped following a “cost assessment” of the scheme.

Coventry City Council will no longer install road humps in Earlsdon due to “limited funding”, it has said in a letter to residents.

Two raised tables – a speed bar with a flat top – have been approved for Spencer Road at its junction with Dalton Road and the junction of Beechwood Avenue with Warwick Avenue.

A council spokesman said concerns raised locally about the removal of the existing pedestrian island also played a part in its decision.

The ‘livable neighbourhood’ scheme is being funded by a grant from the West Midlands Combine Authority (WMCA) and a transport charity worth £770,000, according to documents from the January meeting.

The project included new crossings and “point” closures, as well as “raised tables” at three intersections:

  • Broadway/Belvedere Road
  • Spencer Road/Dalton Road
  • Beechwood Avenue/Warwick Avenue

But now only the first of these will go forward.

The speed humps were part of the council’s plan to manage traffic in the area and included a 20mph zone.

The letter to residents said the first stage of the wider scheme would start this week on May 28.

The three projects that are part of the first phase of measures are:

  • A toucan crossing on Albany Road and the extension of the existing cycleway.
  • Traffic calming features on Beechwood Avenue at the Tennis Club, guardrail improvements at the curve between the Tennis Club and Golf Club and a new pedestrian island at the Golf Club
  • A raised table at the intersection of Broadway and Belvedere Road to slow traffic and improve the pedestrian crossing route in the park.

A council spokesman said: “The decision has been taken not to proceed with the previous proposed works for a raised mass and road appearance changes at the junction of Spencer Road and Dalton Road following a cost assessment and also some local doubts about the removal of the existing pedestrian island.

“Also, the proposed elevated table at the junction of Beechwood Avenue and Stoneleigh Avenue was also withdrawn due to a cost review, as it was felt that changes to parking and other measures nearby were sufficient to meet local needs.

“It is important to note that the Viable Neighborhood went through two phases of consultation with the locals. We worked hard to balance this feedback with cost assessment to develop the final designs.”
