Leicester Bake Off star Josh Smalley wants to teach you how to bake in space on Instagram

Leicester’s Great British Bake Off star Josh Smalley is set to give people an ‘out of this world’ masterclass. Budding bakers will be able to make their own edible meteorites and astronaut ice cream thanks to the free event taking place tomorrow (Friday 10 May).

Josh, a chemistry researcher at the University of Leicester, was runner-up in last year’s Great British Bake Off and teamed up with the National Space Center in Leicester for the event. He’ll be hosting Mission Bake – a free space-themed bounty on Instagram.

The Bake Off star will use artefacts from the Space Center to inspire the bakes. He said: “I am incredibly excited to be working with the National Space Center on this new Mission Bake project. It’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase the wonders of space and the many amazing artifacts at the Space Center through the art of baking.”

The Insta event will kick off with Josh at the Space Center to give an overview of the wonders of the universe before heading to his ‘Space Kitchen’ at the University of Leicester to bake. Josh will guide the bakers every step of the way as they prepare their own edible meteorites, space food and astronaut ice cream.

Josh said: “There will be dishes for everyone to try at home as a family, along with some out-of-this-world performances that will hopefully inspire other creations of your own. So buckle up and let’s get ready to go on this space baking journey! We’ll get lots of recommendations along the way, so you can already start thinking about what things you’d like to see.”

National Space Center bosses hope Josh’s cakes will inspire as many people as possible. Paul Millington, the centre’s content manager, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Josh on Mission Bake. She has an amazing passion for bringing science to life and through this series she will use her incredible baking skills to inspire people of all ages to take an interest in space and science.”

Josh’s space bakes launch on Instagram on Friday (May 10). They will be available for viewing on the Instagram pages @joshpsmalley and @spacecentre.
